Advocates for American Indian Children
Stanford University was among the first to change its "Indians" token having done so in 1972.
Following the school board's 1997 adoption of a resolution to eliminate the use of American Indian mascots, three schools in the Los Angeles school district were instructed to retire their "Indian" sports team tokens
San Francisco area John Swett High School saw efforts in 1999 to change that school's "Indian" related token.
Fremont High School in Sunnyvale changed its mascot from "Indians" to "Firebirds" in 1996.
Galt High School in Sacramento County was the location of a mascot controversy in 1997.
In 2001 the Southwestern College board of trustees changed the name of the school's athletic teams and mascot from Apache to Jaguar. (Chula Vista, CA)
