La Onda Bajita
In this segment of “Across Indian Land” I dedicate the show to our friend and sister in the struggle for justice, Ms. Esmeralda Brown, who passed last week in New York City. She was a long time friend of American Indian Movement (AIM) and the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC). Esmeralda recently retired after decades working with the United Methodist Women’s Church Center in NY and was a constant supporter of the Indigenous peoples gatherings in preparation for the annual United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Esmeralda will be dearly missed.
Tonight we will listen to a tape recording by Govinda Dalton and crew, of Bill Wahpepah speaking at the Bohemian Groove in 1984. Bill’s wise words still linger with us today about the conditions we live in and still we rise to the occasion! Revolution and Devolution! And in the studio we will be speaking with Ms. Jean Whitehorse, Dine/Navajo, about a film called “Ama.” The film recently released is about the sterilization of Indigenous women conducted in the USA by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Services. Jean was among the estimated 70,000 victims that equals to a genocide, or lost generations!
The film will be screened on Monday “Indigenous Peoples Day” October 14 at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater (3117 16th St) starting at 7 pm. The film is part of AIM-WEST 9th International Film Festival October 13-14. On Sunday the Film Festival begins at the Eric Quezada Center, 518 Valencia Street, starting from 2-7 pm. We will have a small reception just prior to the opening. There is a donation requested at the door! First come…!

November 30, annual Red Blues musical concert benefit for AIM-WEST, at 362 Capp St. in SF doors open at 6:30 with Bobby Young Project, Funkanuts, and The Firebirds Blues Band (not in order) there will be cover charge a door, no one turned away.
